. Daniel's Story .
Written By: Dr. Lori Wiener NIH National Cancer Institute Social Worker
. . Daniel is a 15-year-old young man who had
been coming to the NIH National Cancer Institute since he was 3 years old. He was dianosed with cancer at birth and recieved
a transfusion immediately post surgery. A few years later the family was notified
that the transfusion was contaminated with HIV. Daniel has been on many different HIV associated
treatment protocols since this time which have required almost monthly visits. He lives with his Mother, Father, Brother
and Sister in Colorado. His parents are severly financially limited
so that each time they need to be away from work, they struggle to cover their bills. They have taken a 2nd loan on their home in
order to pay bills, but will never miss an appointment to NIH for Daniel's care. Neighter parents nor the other children can
afford health insurance. His Father had a serious back injury and can
no longer work full time and his Mother has developed diabetes in the past two years. Daniel
recieves Social Security Insurance and Medicaid but his Medicaid has been cut off several times when his parent's
income goes above poverty level. FOCC has been a temendous support to this
family over the years. When Daniel became quite ill and needed to
stay at NIH for several weeks FOCC helped cover some of their mortage and utility bills. Daniel is currently terminally ill and Mom
is no longr able to work. FOCC again has helped with some of their bills so that his Mom can be with
him during the last months of his life. The family is most appreciative of the care
that NIH has given Daniel and the emormous support that programs such as FOCC has provided. .
